Our BA (Hons) Football Development programme focuses on understanding the critical role of football practitioners, leaders, and facilitators in developing opportunities for people to take part in the sport.

Examine the evolution of a global sport

You will consider the relationship between the development of association football on local, national, and international levels and the frontline workforce who deliver its advancements.

Alongside this, an integrated involvement in various social and professional contexts enables you to acquire the delivery, management and leadership skills that underpin and contribute to the football development process and wider football job market.

The Course

Develop the core skills needed to improve your practical and coaching competence

Our BA (Hons) Football Development programme provides an opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge required to gain employment in the football industry both in the UK and internationally.

You will take innovate and exciting modules in your first year that will give you a fundamental overview of the key aspects and concepts of football development.

You will then have the opportunity to pursue one of two pathways in your second year through until the end of your degree: an applied professional project (Route A) or our direct work placement route (Route B).

The Enquiring Practitioner

While learning the technical components involved in the teaching and coaching of specific skills, you will also be introduced to fundamental biomechanical principles which impact performance. The module will apply research and enquiry to real-life lived experiences that are associated with your potential future career paths.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, examinations, portfolios, practical assessments, lab reports, and oral presentations.

Our course includes a mix of assessments, so that you may develop a wide range of transferable skills. Modules are assessed at every stage of the course, offering cumulative assessment of your progress.

You can monitor your own progress, allowing you the opportunity to discuss and plan your development with your lecturers throughout the course. Where appropriate special arrangements can be made for students with an identified need.

Pathway Routes

Gain professional industry experience or develop your skills as a practitioner

In your second year, you will have the opportunity to pursue your interests and build your course around you.

We offer you the ability to pursue a professional work placement within a football development context, or develop your skills as a practitioner as you explore the current landscape of modern football coaching. These pathways will continue through until the end your degree, with distinct module options and assessment methods.

Applied Professional Project

This route allows you to examine the dynamic nature of contemporary football coaching, with a highly-practical focus. You will be able to demonstrate and develop your competence and skills as a football practitioner, both as a player and a coach.

In your final year, you will explore the methodologies used by coaches to adapt and cater for a variety of different groups and contexts. You will consider the necessary flexibility of the coach across a range of contexts and develop expertise within less familiar sporting activities and types of groups.

You will also explore globalisation and the emergence of different sports cultures including countercultural and disability sports.

Work Placement Route

This six-week option will allow you gain vital experience in a professional setting within the football industry.

The placement will allow you to practically apply your theoretical learning to real-world professional situations, present you with networking opportunities, and increase your future employability.

In your third year, you will critically reflect on your placement experiences and consider your professional strengths and weaknesses and potential career progression. It encourages you to plan for the transition from university to work or other related goals.
