Discover design strategies and processes
This BEng (Hons) Design Engineering degree will explore digital technologies and engineering manufacturing processes. You will develop your practical skills and theoretical understanding on engineering design through a range of modules, workshops and projects.
You will explore a range of design strategies and develop the technical, digital and practical skills you need to have an impact in the industry after you graduate. You may have the opportunity to work on live projects and gain real industry experience during your degree.
You will be taught in small, interactive seminar groups and complete interdisciplinary projects in every year of your degree, allowing you to put your learning immediately into practice. You will work in collaboration with students studying mechanical and electrical engineering as well as working on live client based industrial projects where possible.
On this course you will:
- Explore topics including design orientated approaches to engineering.
- Have opportunities to work on live projects.
- Study in the £35 million Digital and Engineering Technology Park.
- With insight to human factors and CAD/ digital applications.
Develop your technical, digital and practical skills.
- Prepare to enter the industry after you graduate.
Teaching and Assessment
How you will learn
This course is taught in small, interactive seminar groups at our Tech Park. This is different to traditional engineering courses which often involve large, impersonal lectures.
You will learn through seminars, workshops, tutorials and project practical time.
You will be assessed through a range of assignments which may include coursework, written exams, lab and practical work, project work, presentations and online tests.
What you will learn

Mathematical Principles I
This introductory module provides a mathematical foundation for Engineering students. This module assumes some experience in applied mathematics at level 3 (A level, BTEC) and is essential for studying other modules in electrical and mechanical engineering. You will be assessed through an assignment using the METLAB software and an analysis assignment.
Discover what you can do after you graduate
This BEng (Hons) Design Engineering degree will prepare you for a range of careers in industry. Our engineering graduates are successful in a wide range of sectors.
You will graduate with more than your engineering knowledge. You will graduate as a numerate and scientifically trained thinker with skills that are immediately transferable to a range of sectors. Your independent project work, team projects, presentations, skills and lab experiences will help you to develop skills that are useful in a range of job roles, and you will have the opportunity to study business and enterprise modules to prepare you for the industry or to set up your own business.
