Overview
This degree has been designed in consultation with event professionals and event organisations to ensure you will experience suitable academic study and practical experience. You will explore the applied, logistical, business and operational elements of event management, and learn from and work with event managers who have staged events all over the world.
An integral part of this programme is emphasis on practical experience through contact with ‘real world’ situations. The BA (Hons) Event Management Top-Up degree is a business based degree that will equip you with the skills to be successful in this very competitive industry. By joining the final year of BA (Hons) Event Management as a top-up student, you can also choose to undertake a 10 week work placement to gain valuable experience working in an organisation, or write a thesis for a management project.
Emphasis will also be placed on health and safety and risk management. Final year modules including, sponsorship, public relations and marketing communications are designed to support you in the delivery of you final ‘live’ event or your thesis. Each module you’ll undertake is usually supported by a weekly tutor-facilitated workshop of approximately 2.5-3 hours. Group sizes are typically 20-25 students.
For your final year ‘live’ event, you may work with tutors in even smaller groups of 6-8 to deliver an event for a client. In the past students have organised spectacular events including auctions, gala balls, award ceremonies, music festivals, fashion exhibitions, sport challenge events, game shows and family fun days. If you choose to write a thesis, you will be assigned to your own personal project supervisor.
Our assessments are varied and you may be asked to write event proposals, operational plans, design social and multimedia tools or websites, plan live events and to deliver PowerPoint pitches and presentations.
We believe that this hands-on approach to learning and varied assessment is the most effective way to develop the skills that employers are looking for.
On this course you will:
- Create, design and stage events.
- Learn from and work with event managers who have staged events all over the world; from Hong Kong to Sydney, from Barbados to the USA to the UK.
- Hear from guest speakers, attend field trips, and apply for volunteering opportunities.
- Be able to complete a 10-week work placement.
- Develop valuable soft skills like teamwork, communication and time management.
Teaching and Assessment
How you will learn
Our approach to supporting your learning, and how your learning is assessed, is designed to enable you to become a confident and enterprising graduate.
Our 97% student satisfaction rating is due to the fact that we are focused on supporting your ambitions, in parallel with ensuring that the needs of employers are met.
With this in mind, key features of our approach to learning and assessment include the following:
- Instead of the more traditional large group lecture method to teaching undergraduate students used by most University Business Schools, our approach involves tutors working with relatively small numbers of students at a time. As well as providing an excellent environment for supporting you in the development of your subject expertise, this helps you to develop a wide range of soft skills such as teamwork, communication and time management. These attributes are highly valued by graduate employers.
- We offer opportunities to work with organisations on current commercial and business problems and projects. These experiences are used to provide the basis for assessments that enable you to apply your learning within authentic commercial situations.
The Course
What you will study
You will study a selection of core and optional modules. Each module is worth a number of credits and is delivered differently depending on its content and focus of study.
This list is indicative and subject to change.
Work Placement (Short)
Many of our students take this double module as it is an opportunity to gain valuable management experience of working in an organisation for 10-12 weeks during semester two. Typically, you would carry out your Research Dissertation during this placement and focus on the project areas you are working on and a research topic that the organisation will benefit from the most. This module allows you to gain work experience in an area of business and management that you are most interested in working in after graduating and enhance your employability skills. We are not aware of any other university that offers this opportunity, which we know is very attractive to employers. You will be assessed through a learning log submission and an individual presentation.
