Prepare for the next stage of your theatre career
These MA Theatre and MA Theatre Collectives courses are designed for interdisciplinary theatre and performance artists or groups*. The programme is designed to be flexible with options to study full-time, part-time, or through distance learning.
The courses combine taught study with research, and explore postgraduate research methodologies. You will use these methodologies to create a new piece of work, an artists portfolio, business plan, and a practice-led-research project.
This artist led theatre-making programme is particularly suited to practitioners (emerging or established) looking to define and/or refine their professional practice, artistic identity and portfolio. A key aspect of the course is the mentoring you receive from professional practitioners. You will receive mentorship to provide an ‘external’ view on your work and provide support for ongoing development alongside self-directed practice.
You will develop your practical and study skills to postgraduate level as you take part in interdisciplinary practice-led research methodologies and contribute to practice led research and the development of new work. You will develop and independent and driven ethos as well as strategies for professional self-reliance which will support you throughout your career. The course also focuses on innovation and experimentation in contemporary live arts making.
This programme is designed to be extremely flexible, reflecting the diversity of approaches to making contemporary theatre and performance. The Department of Theatre at Chichester has an established reputation for working with a wide range of contemporary performance artists who recognise the opportunities of creative research and development within an applied university context.
Our departmental relationship with the Fine Art department means we welcome student whose practice and approaches fall in-between, or outside of, or crossover, conventional and/or traditional labels and contexts for Theatre, Performance and the Live Arts.
Our programme is run by a team of leading-edge interdisciplinary academics and artists, who also teach on the BA Theatre and Performing Arts MPhil/PhD programmes. We work very closely with a wide range of established artists and performance collectives – both members of Faculty and Associate Artists – who recognise the unique contribution Chichester makes to supporting new theatre and performance work. Your own new work will be stimulated by a continuous programme of professional performances from a wide range of international artists, many of whom support the work of the department through teaching and mentoring.

Theatre Groups and Collectives
The ‘Theatre Collective’ strand of the course means we welcome block-applications from groups of artists who are keen to develop their creative identity as part of a shared collective. Groups co-author and produce most of the work through the programme together, while finding space and contexts to refine and develop their individual research interests.
Teaching and Assessment
How you will learn
You will be be assessed through a range of assignments including the the creation of practical (public) performances, work-in progress sharings and ‘scratch’ presentations, practical workshops and interactive/participatory research activities, monographs and artists books, business models and plans, research papers and presentations and a written thesis.
The Course
What you will study
You will study a selection of core modules on this course. You will study 180 modules across:
- Developmental Project (Practice-led Research and Development project , including a written dissertation, 60 credits)
- Production (Practical Project, 60 credits)
- Professional Portfolio (Professional development and representation, 30 credits)
- Research Methodologies (Critical Studies, 15 credits)
- Cultural Identity and Performance (Critical/Practical Research Project, 15 credits)
Production and Developmental Project serve as the year-long core creative projects, supported by external and professional reflection through Professional Portfolio.
These projects are delivered in a rigorous, yet highly flexible, context, with regular masterclasses and visiting lectures, by professional practitioners, supported by tutorials and seminars with tutors and mentors.

Use industry standard spaces and equipment
Assembly Theatre, used by Theatre students for rehearsals and performance, alongside a range of other spaces and sites to make and present work.
We also have a number of soundproofed practice rooms for rehearsals and lessons, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. Our Chapel is also a fantastic venue for performances and rehearsals, and is the centre piece of the campus. There are also several dance studios, and a 110-seat studio theatre. Our Tech Park hosts industry standard digital, film, and music resources too.
The Showroom
The ShowRoom is recognised nationally for presenting some of the most exciting companies touring on the UK circuit, and the programme is shaped to support the learning of students.
We often run workshops and post-show discussion for Theatre students with visiting artists. We believe that one of the best ways to learn about professional theatre is by watching a training with arts industry professionals. This is at the heart of the ShowRoom’s ambition.
The ShowRoom is highly adaptable, with retractable seating, making it an excellent teaching and workshop space in addition to its role as a venue. It is run by our Theatre Manager and Department Technician, who work closely with our students, helping them to realise creative and adventurous ideas in a professional working space.

Work Placements
Gain experience in industry
Completing work placements will introduce you to the industry and give you the opportunity to graduate with experience in a professional context.
You will have the chance to establish a professional artistic identity as you take part in a continuous programme of professional performances. You will have the opportunity to work with the technical, marketing, or outreach departments of local theatres in art centres and other venues, theatre companies, independent producers, schools/colleges and various other related contexts.
Cultural Exchange Programme
You will be encouraged to work further afield – across the UK, Europe, or the USA – with the Department’s Cultural Exchange programme. We arrange intensive weekend residencies and summer schools to meet the needs of current students, with a programme designed to work around the calendars of working artists.
